Turn a PDF into editable Word text
A PDF preserves where things appear on a page. A Word document needs editable paragraphs. Classic Converter’s browser converter extracts text into a DOCX file, with page breaks; it does not recreate the original document’s layout.
Choose the right starting point
Try selecting a sentence in your PDF viewer. If you can select the words, start with normal text extraction. If the page is a photograph or a scan with no selectable text, enable OCR. The current OCR option recognizes English and runs on your device after downloading its recognition resources.
- Open PDF to Word and select the PDF you are allowed to process.
- If the PDF is encrypted, enter its open password for reading. The tool does not recover forgotten passwords.
- Start with text extraction, or enable OCR for scanned pages.
- Choose Convert & download. Keep the original PDF alongside the exported DOCX.
- Read the conversion warnings and compare the result against the original.
What the result will look like
For a two-page letter, expect editable text grouped into paragraphs with a page break between pages. Original fonts, images, tables, columns, and exact spacing are not retained. A page containing no readable text can produce a warning instead of useful content.
A multi-column brochure may have text in the wrong reading order. A bank statement may lose its table structure. For either case, check the result carefully or use the source document if you have it. PDF to Word is best suited to recovering text for editing, rather than making a visually identical copy.
Check before sharing
- Compare names, dates, totals, and punctuation, especially after OCR.
- Look for missing pages, empty paragraphs, and repeated headers.
- Rebuild tables and formatting in Word where needed.
- Do not treat a converted copy as preserving a PDF’s digital signature.
Privacy and performance
This conversion runs in your browser. The PDF is not sent to the conversion API for this operation. OCR may take longer on large scans or older devices; closing the tab interrupts the job. The tool’s displayed limits and warnings apply.
Why is my exported document empty?
The PDF may contain images without a text layer. Try OCR on a clear scan. If the page is blank, the password is incorrect, or the scan is unreadable, changing the output format cannot restore missing text.
Will it reproduce a complex document exactly?
No. This tool prioritizes editable text. If you need the original layout, obtain the original Word file when possible. Keep the PDF for visual reference.
