Remove security

The interactive tool loads here. JavaScript is required to use its controls; the instructions below are available without it.

Create an unencrypted copy of a PDF using the password needed to read it. This tool uploads your PDF and its supplied password to our conversion service. It is for documents you own or have permission to modify; it does not crack forgotten passwords.

How to remove a PDF password

  1. Keep the original, especially if it is digitally signed, and select one PDF.
  2. Enter its current password. You can leave this blank when the PDF already opens without a password and only has reader permission restrictions.
  3. Leave the digital-signature restrictions option off unless you intentionally need to disable those signatures. Decryption already removes password-based permission flags.
  4. Select Remove security and download. Close and reopen the downloaded copy to confirm it opens without a password, then check its pages and any interactive fields.

Decryption and signature restrictions are different

Decryption produces an output file without PDF encryption, removing the associated password-based printing, copying and editing restrictions. It does not reconstruct damaged content or make scanned text editable.

The extra checkbox removes security restrictions associated with digital signatures. It disables those signatures while leaving their visible appearance in place. A visible signature mark after this step must not be treated as a valid digital signature.

Rewriting a signed PDF can invalidate its signatures even without that checkbox. Preserve the signed original as the version to verify, and treat the unlocked file as a separate working copy.

Example: prepare your own PDF for further editing

If a report you created is password-protected and a browser editing tool cannot load it, use the known password to create an unlocked copy first. Make your edits on that copy, review the output and add fresh protection only after editing is complete.

The current password is used to read the input, not retained as an opening requirement in the output. Store the downloaded unencrypted copy appropriately and avoid sharing it unintentionally.

Uploads, failures and practical limits

The service receives your PDF and password only when you run the action; choosing the file prepares a local preview. The hosted PDF limit is currently 5 MB, subject to the displayed configuration. Read the file retention policy before using server processing.

A wrong password, unsupported encryption or a damaged PDF can prevent processing. Confirm that the source opens in your regular PDF reader and retry with the correct password. A service connection failure is separate from a password error; use Check again after it finishes starting.

Frequently asked questions

Can this tool unlock a PDF when I do not know its opening password?

No. If the document requires a password to read its contents, you must supply a working password. Ask the document owner for access or an unlocked copy.

Do I need the signature checkbox to remove printing restrictions?

No. Decryption removes password-based permission flags. The extra checkbox concerns restrictions associated with digital signatures and disables those signatures.

Will my original PDF change?

The tool downloads a separate copy. Keep the original file and use a different saved filename if your browser asks whether to replace an existing download.
