Compute a digest for text or a selected file using MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384 or SHA-512. A digest is a compact fingerprint for comparison, not an encrypted version of the source.
How to use this tool
- Choose text or file input and select the algorithm.
- Generate the digest.
- Compare it with a trusted digest produced using the same algorithm and exact input bytes.
How to interpret the result
Whitespace, encoding and line endings can change a text digest. MD5 and SHA-1 are legacy choices and should not be relied on for collision-resistant security. A matching hash from an untrusted source does not establish who created a file.
Frequently asked questions
Can a hash be decrypted?
No. Hashing is not reversible encryption. Use an encryption tool when you need to recover the original content with a password.
