XML Validator

The interactive tool loads here. JavaScript is required to use its controls; the instructions below are available without it.

Check whether XML is well formed using the browser XML parser. The tool helps locate mismatched tags, malformed attributes and other syntax problems before sending XML elsewhere.

How to use this tool

A minimal well-formed document is <note><to>Sam</to></note>. Each opening tag needs a matching closing tag, and XML tag names are case-sensitive, so <Item> and </item> do not match.

  1. Paste one XML document.
  2. Select Validate and read the result.
  3. Correct any reported syntax problem and repeat the check.

How to interpret the result

Well-formed XML is not the same as schema-valid XML. This tool does not validate against an XSD or establish that another application will accept the document. Error wording depends on the browser parser.

Frequently asked questions

Will it validate my XSD rules?

No. Use a schema-aware validator with the relevant XSD for constraints such as required elements, ordering and data types.
