Word Counter

The interactive tool loads here. JavaScript is required to use its controls; the instructions below are available without it.

Count words, characters, lines, sentences, paragraphs and UTF-8 bytes while editing plain text. This browser tool is useful for checking a draft before pasting it into a form or editor with its own length limit.

How to use this tool

  1. Type or paste a draft in Your text.
  2. Read the live statistics and edit the draft as needed.
  3. Use Copy text to copy the content, or Clear to empty it.

How to interpret the result

Words are counted by whitespace-separated groups. Sentences use punctuation and paragraphs use blank lines, so abbreviations and languages without spaces may differ from a word processor. The result counts the text supplied, not the contents of an uploaded document.

Frequently asked questions

Why does another editor show a different word count?

Editors use different word-boundary rules for hyphens, symbols and languages. Use the destination system count when a submission has a strict limit.
