JSON Validator

The interactive tool loads here. JavaScript is required to use its controls; the instructions below are available without it.

Check whether a text value can be parsed as JSON and read an error when it cannot. This is a syntax check for a single JSON value, not a check of the meaning of its fields.

How to use this tool

A quick syntax check: {"items":[1,2],"ready":false} is valid, while {items:[1,2]} is not because JSON property names need double quotes. Fix the source text, then validate again.

  1. Paste the JSON text.
  2. Select Validate.
  3. Read the parser message, correct the source, and validate again.

How to interpret the result

A successful result does not establish JSON Schema compliance, uniqueness of object keys or lossless representation of large numbers. Empty input is not JSON. Use double quotes around strings and property names and remove JavaScript-only syntax.

Frequently asked questions

Can a single number or string be valid JSON?

Yes. JSON values can be objects, arrays, strings, numbers, booleans or null; they need not always be objects.
