Measure text length, whitespace-free length and encoded byte size in your browser. A character limit and a byte limit are different: accented letters and emoji can occupy more bytes than simple ASCII text.
How to use this tool
- Paste text into Your text.
- Compare Characters, No spaces and Bytes.
- Shorten the text and recheck it before copying it to the destination.
How to interpret the result
Characters uses JavaScript string length, which counts UTF-16 code units. Some emoji and combined characters count as more than one. No spaces removes all whitespace, and Bytes measures UTF-8 encoding. None of these necessarily matches a social network character policy.
Frequently asked questions
Does one emoji count as one character?
Not always. The tool does not count visible grapheme clusters; an emoji can use several code units or a sequence of characters.
